Enjoy a scenic morning cruise to Mohács. You’ll then visit Pécs, founded more than 2,000 years ago by the Romans. Our excursion today will visit the UNESCO-designated St. Peter’s Basilica, the city’s main Catholic cathedral along with its catacombs; and Széchenyi Square, the heart of Old Town Pécs. You will also see a unique church which was once the Mosque of Pasha Qasim the Victorious, one of the symbols of the city. The Cathedral, also known as the St Peter and St Paul Basilica is dominated by four 60 meter towers, making it one of Pécs’ most impressive buildings. The inside is equally remarkable. Divided by a splendid arch, the cathedral plays host to the famous frescoes of Bertalan Székely alongside a manual organ. You will notice the fascinating blend of both Christian and Muslim influences in its design.
You will also see a unique fountain, with the most iconic part of the monument being the four ox heads which release drinkable water. Király Street is found in the heart of Pécs. It is a very popular area within the city and is filled with a buzzing atmosphere. This is a great place to visit and is home to a number of stylish shops and cafés. Surrounded by buildings in the baroque style, this street is close to a number of Pécs’ main attractions such as the National Theatre and a former monastery. The Palatinus Hotel with its Art Nouveau style is especially striking. Or for wine connoisseurs, choose the ship sponsored excursion going to the Szekszárd wine region, one of the oldest red-wine-growing areas in Hungary, established more than 2,000 years ago. Or for the active minded, choose the excursion to take you on an exhilarating guided bike tour around Mohács. (B,L,D)

Alternatively, you may wish to choose a wine tasting excursion to Ilok, a center of wine production since Roman times, where you’ll sample its famous Grasevina, Traminac and Frankovka wines. Back on board, after a sumptuous lunch onboard, we will cruise to Novi Sad, sometimes called the “Serbian Athens.” Discover Novi Sad on a walking tour to Dunavski Park and through Stari Grad, the Old Town center. Or if you prefer a more active exploration, join a guided biking tour or a scenic hiking tour through Fruska Gora National Park. After dinner onboard, join us if you wish, for an evening excursion to visit Petrovaradin Fortress, a mighty stronghold that no enemy has ever breached. Numerous legends are associated with Petrovaradin Fortress, the most famous of which is the one with a secret tunnel under the riverbed that connects the Fortress with the left bank of the Danube, and which served as a passage for the last Austro-Hungarian soldier and his fiancée in 1913. Apart from this, there is a well-known legend according to which the builders of the Fortress put live cats into the foundations of the new fortification at the beginning of the 17th century in order to ensure the longevity of the Fortress stemming from the belief that cats have nine lives. The ancient King Decebalus, the last king of Dacia, is proudly carved into the mountainside and always captivates travelers. Other highlights of our cruising through the Iron Gates this afternoon include “ The Cave in the Rock Wall”, the “Cross on the Cliff” and the Mraconia Monastery built into the rock formation walls of the gorge (B,L,D) October 28th, 2023

After checking out of our hotel in Brasov, we will be driven the short 30 minutes to the village of Bran, where we will enjoy a guided visit of Transylvania’s legendary Bran Castle, forever linked with the legend of Dracula. For those who joined us last night for our Halloween party at the very same castle, you will notice things during this daytime guided tour that you may not have noticed on your nighttime party visit. Bran Castle in Transylvania is famous for spawning the original vampire legend of Count Dracula. Long before sparkly vampires à la Twilight, the original bloodsucking creature of the night was said to roam the shadowy halls of this Transylvania 'Dracula' castle. Today you can tread in the footsteps of the night stalker himself. Perched precariously on a rock high above a valley near Brașov in Romania, the castle is a one of a kind landmark. It even has its own secret passage, connecting the 1st and third floors.
Later in the day, we will be transferred to Bucharest, the capital of Romania and check into our hotel for the final two nights of our tour. (B)
