The islands of Svalbard rise dramatically from the Arctic Ocean halfway between Norway’s North Cape and the North Pole. They give eloquent evidence of Nature’s slow but ceaseless efforts, scored and corrugated by glaciers that still cover 60 percent of their mass. Stony, sentinel peaks soar above deeply carved fjords and sparkling bays.

 In summer, the sparse tundra vegetation erupts under the endless encouragement of the Midnight Sun. Migratory birds in their millions arrive from more southerly realms, to nest and breed and nurture their young on steep, striated cliffs, shingle beaches and tundra meadows. Elaborately-antlered reindeer graze the slopes. Arctic foxes and predatory gulls haunt the nursery edges, alert for opportunity.

Seals and walruses haul out to join the breeding season, and patient polar bears patrol the rocky shorelines and floating ice, while whales roll and breach offshore, feeding on the sea’s summer abundance. 

Here and there, bleached testaments to past human endeavors endure: whalebones and weathered trypots from medieval whaling stations; the wind-sanded timbers of an expedition’s launching site; a hut where someone whiled away a long-ago, dark winter. Riding in Zodiacs and paddling kayaks, observing from the decks and trekking on the islands themselves, we will experience and explore this isolated, unspoiled and breathtakingly beautiful place, as it revels in the endless days of its short, exuberant summer.

DAY 8

Bjornoya (Bear Island), Norway

ARRIVES 07:00 AM

Halfway between Europe’s North Cape and the Svalbard Archipelago, isolated Bjørnøya also sits along the line between the Norwegian Sea and the Barents Sea. Its fortress-like cliffs and sea stacks greet your arrival with the white-noise of uncountable nesting seabirds coming and going from the rock walls. They circle overhead as you explore the sea caves and narrow channels between the stacks and the cliff in Zodiacs. Conditions permitting, the flat, lunar terrain of the opposite shore at Herwighamna may allow you to land and meet the small crew of scientists at its weather station.

Hornvika, Norway And Skarsvag, Norway

Until the mid-20th century, visitors to the North Cape had to arrive by sea, then be transferred ashore for the rather steep hike to the actual plateau 1,000 feet above. (The road to Nordkapp was only completed in 1956.) 

Seabourn guests will reach the site via Zodiacs departing from the fishing village of Skarsvåg; along the way, passing by a spectacular rock formation known as the Horn.

(The Sami People considered the Horn to be a sacred place, offering gifts there in the hope of good fortune.)   Upon our arrival, follow the series of steps and walkways up to the plateau for photos from the northernmost point of the European mainland — and then relax, as our  return to the ship is by road.

Later this afternoon we will enjoy scenic cruising of the North Cape.

Further north, the mountainous archipelagoes of Franz Josef Land and Svalbard are the last lands before the Polar Ice Pack. The Midnight Sun does not dip below the horizon here at any time between May 14 and July 31 each year. Sheer and formidable, the North Cape pays its role to the hilt, emphatically declaring itself the end of Europe’s landmass.

Tromso, Norway
   

Our cruise ends today in Tromso Norway.

Passengers should book their flights home from Tromso (most flights will connect via Oslo, the capital of Norway,  with either the United Airlines/Lufthansa partnership or the KLM/Delta airlines partnership)

If your flight is a late day or early evening flight, you can enjoy either a city tour of Tromso or a day use hotel room and transport to the airport, from Seabourn Cruise Line.

The Discovery Center, which is adjacent to the Expedition Lounge on Deck 4, acts as the teaching & academic center for natural history and cultural programming in an environment spacious enough to accommodate all guests at one time. Each day, guests will visit this venue for insightful lectures, briefings, and Seabourn Conversations enrichment programming designed to help educate them throughout their expedition experience.

The world-class 26-person expedition team of wilderness experts, scientists, historians and naturalists will deliver rich, insightful lectures and discussions on a broad array of topics related to the region where guests are sailing. Inspired by the compelling landscape of some of the expedition destinations, the Discovery Center incorporates the organic shapes of topography maps against the elegant curves of the plush custom seating.

Audio-visual experiences will come to life through high-definition screens 2.5 meters high by 10 meters wide, showing a variety of programming to create a captivating experience that whets the appetite and creates excitement for each destination. Footage from submarine voyages will also be shown, providing an enticing look at the undersea world and the marine life that calls it home.  All sessions are free to attend.

Bow Lounge

Located on Deck 6, at the forward-most part of the vessel, the Bow Lounge provides the closest access to water level via the foredeck, making it the perfect spot for guests to spend some time watching for marine life. Within a few steps, guests can be outside, with a vantage point that is ideal to watch the ship’s course, spot wildlife, or take in the beautiful natural scenery.

Constellation Lounge

The Constellation Lounge will be the highest indoor viewing point on each ship. Floor-to-ceiling glass walls will wrap around the space, offering guests stunning 270-degree, outward-facing views as far as their eyes can see, heightening their expeditionary spirit while bringing them closer to wildlife and wonders at sea and in port.

Expedition Lounge

The Expedition Lounge, located on Deck 4, is the heart of the ship. A gathering place for the curious, guests are invited to relax or linger with a complimentary cocktail or glass of fine wine from the bar as they share photos and stories from the day with their fellow travelers and the onboard staff. The Expedition Lounge will be central to the Seabourn expedition operation where guests convene before and after expeditions each day.
Two large touchscreens will also display a wealth of information including photos, navigational charts, weather charts, and maps.

Seabourn Square

A place to enjoy your newspaper or to socialize with your fellow passengers, Seabourn Square is what you're looking for. Seabourn Square is the true ‘living room’ of the  ships. An inviting sociable space where guests will find a charming European style coffee bar, Seabourn Square has been designed as an open, comfortable environment for guests to interact with onboard officers and the expedition team and engage in conversation with family and new friends. The space is also home to the highly-trained Guest Services staff, who provide a range of concierge services such as general ship information, assistance with special service requests, port and travel information, and more.

A selection of coffees are prepared by the skilled onboard baristas some using beans roasted in Seabourn Square. For those feeling a bit hungry, Seabourn Square offers freshly made pastries and other on-the-go breakfast items in the morning, as well as an assortment of light sandwiches and desserts later in the day, along with a selection of artisanal gelatos made on board.
