Elephant Island/Cape Lookout antarctica

Penguins waddling on Elephant Island Antarctica
Situated off the coast of Antarctica, Elephant Island is named after the elephant seals that populate it and due to the island being shaped like an elephant head. Rugged mountains, glistening sheets of ice and unique wildlife add to the mystique of this remote destination. Despite its seemingly unforgiving, yet hauntingly beautiful landscape, legions of tuxedoed-looking penguins waddle across the rocky terrain while giant elephant seals lounge on its shores.
Deception Island, Antarctica

Deception Island is a mountainous, horseshoe-shaped island located off the coast of Antarctica in the South Shetland Islands. This wildlife sanctuary serving as a habitat to eight nesting seabirds, an active volcano, and the largest group of penguins in the Antarctic Peninsula (and possibly the world!)
You can get a memorable glimpse of chinstrap penguins waddling about, slipping in and out of the frigid waters. You’ll also see a picturesque shot at of Deception Island’s active volcano. It geothermally heats the island’s black-sand beach and warms the nearby water, providing a unique landscape in an otherwise frozen world.
Lastly, we will end our cruise in Buenos Aires, Argentina, with the option to extend to see Iguazu Falls, the largest/widest falls in the world on our optional 2 night Iguazu Falls extension.

Of course, this scene has been immortalized by both Broadway and film adaptations of her life story.
We will also visit the most elaborate cemetery in the world, where the walkways feel like a beautiful tree lined manicured park and the tombstones look like they are fit for a king (or a queen). No Eva Peron, was not officially a queen, but her country adored her like one and buried her like one.

Thursday Jan. 19th, 2023 Punta Arenas, Chile *8am to 4pm

Punta Arenas, Chile
From the original name "Sandy Point," this southernmost capital city in Chile had its humble beginnings as sparse penal colony near the Straits of Magellan. Today, Punta Arenas is regarded as a geopolitical point of interest given its strategic location as a gateway to the Antarctic Peninsula.
If you wish, join us for an optional shore excursion to the Penguin colony of Magdalena island to observe the Magellan penguins in their natural habitat. A large colony of penguins nest and breed here, each year between October and March. They bury their eggs in sandy burrows and under shrubs. At this time of year most of the chicks will have hatched. They’re naturally curious and amazing to watch the waddle across the desolate sandy moon like landscape. You will see hundreds of penguins as far as the eye can see.

Explorer Ernest Shackleton (the first man to reach Antarctica) visited elephant Island during his 1916 discovery expedition.
Elephant Island has two historical sites to see.
The first is the Endurance Site, commemorating Shackleton’s journey (His boat was named the Endurance). The other is the wreckage of a large wooden boat in Hampson Cove (in the southwestern part of the island). Because of this wreck, the site was designated a historical monument and is now a feature of the island.
Penguins play alongside the Shackleton Endurance commemoration site, with a cruise ship anchored in the harbor for excursions to explore this incredible island, its dramatic scenery and its natural wildlife.
Multiple varieties of penguin species migrate to or live on Elephant Island, including the chinstrap penguin and the Gentoo penguin. Gentoo penguins are recognizable by their waddling tails, while chinstrap penguins can be identified by the black strip under their heads, which almost looks like the strap of a helmet.
Elephants seals are everywhere on Elephant Island.
The adorable elephant seals that give the island its name are one of a kind. Their large hanging noses resemble elephants’ trunks, and they’re known for making loud, roaring noises, particularly during mating season. Don’t let their cuteness fool you — when giant elephant seal males fight for mates, things can get ugly and you may witness this natural fighting between male elephant seals, so have your camera and video devices ready.
Admire the Local Seal Population
You won’t find the seals on Elephant Island living in practically any other place on Earth. They’re known for their trunk-style noses that resemble—you guessed it—an elephant’s trunk. These creatures are massive; adult male elephant seals can weigh upwards of 8,000 pounds fully grown. Keep a look out for fur seals and their tiny pups, which are the smallest species of seal. Dwarfed by the elephant seals, fur seals rely on their furry coats to stay warm.
The wildlife can easily be seen from the deck of the cruise ship as it traverses and pulls into ideal viewing coves along the island.
Or for the more adventuresome, sign up for a shore excursion from the cruise line to enjoy a guided hike or for the real adventuresome, even a kayak excursion in the frigid waters.

Wed. Jan. 25th, 2023 Stanley, Falkland Islands 7am 5pm
A COLONY OF KING PENGUINS IN THE FALKLAND ISLANDS
Arrive to the capital of the Falkland Islands, also known as Port Stanley and you’ll find a coastal town worthy of a jigsaw puzzle. This quaint city is home to a small population (so few are the residents that the town’s only “jail” can only hold thirteen people.) But it’s a place big on things to see and do. Whether you visit the Anglican Christ Church Cathedral, the southernmost cathedral in the world,
or visit the only colony of king penguins which humans can visit on earth. Join us for an optional SHORE excursion to see the King Penguins, the 2nd largest species of penguins
The Falklands population of King Penguins (1,500 breeding pairs) is almost entirely concentrated at one site at Volunteer Point, which is where our optional group shore excursion today will visit.
The biggest of the Falkland Islands penguins, King penguins are also the most striking to look at! Their crowded colony is a hive of activity, as grown King penguins make their way through the throngs of fluffy brown chicks.
King penguins can grow up to a metre tall (3 feet) and as they stand proudly with their bills held high, they often appear larger. Their black heads are highlighted with a bright orange ‘cuff’ that extends from their collar up around the back of the head in a circular shape.
The orange theme is continued in the lower half of their bills and at the top of their chest where the orange becomes yellow as fans out like an upside down sunrise. The rest of their bodies are covered in a silver grey plumage, while their bellies are the color of snow.
As the breeding cycle of the King penguin takes over a year, there are always penguins at Volunteer Point. But over the winter months, chicks are largely left to themselves with their parents only returning sporadically to feed them. Chicks start hatching late January and don’t go to sea until they have their adult feathers – around 10-11 months later – so the best time to see the natural phenomena of the penguin chicks hatching at volunteer point and their parent penguins attending to the chicks, is in January !
Unlike other penguins, Kings don’t make a nest or even live in burrows. Instead, they pack together in their colony, carrying the egg on their feet covered by a flap of abdominal skin called the brood patch. It is looked after this way for around 2 months being passed from one parent to the other every week to 2 weeks. Visiting during January, we will get to witness this natural habitat ritual of these spectacular King Penguins.

Falkland Islands (Stanley)

KING PENGUINS IN STANLEY, FALKLAND ISLANDS
Stanley, capital of the Falklands, is a tiny British outpost where the absence of traffic lights and abundance of pubs in comparison to its size makes this a unique place. Indeed, armed only with hospitality, this rural community at the end of the world has no shortage of friendly locals.
Situated near Cape Horn in South America, the harbor at Stanley was one of the world's largest shipping graveyards of the 19th century. Many of the ships that set out for faraway ports met their destiny here, battered by Cape Horn's treacherous waters.
The Falklands is also a bird-watchers haven, with an amazing diversity of seabirds and mammals that breed in the Falklands — black-browed albatross, giant petrels, five types of penguin, including the 2nd largest penguin species the King Penguins, plus elephant seals, sea lions, striated caracara, crested caracara, night heron to name a few.
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE REGION:
Stanley Harbor
Along the seven-mile harbor, you can see the hulks of some 20 ships that were tossed by Cape Horn, never to leave the Falklands.
Britannia House Museum
Learn about the tumultuous past of these islands at this fascinating museum.
Fly Fishing
The fly-fishing is excellent for sea trout, with recorded catches in excess of 20 pounds.

OPTIONAL 2 NIGHT POST CRUISE TOUR TO IGUAZU FALLS ARGENTINA
We will be transferred from the cruise ship to the Buenos Aires domestic airport for our flight to Iguazu Falls. The flight is just under 2 hours. Upon arrival we will be transferred to our hotel for our two night stay.
The rest of the afternoon and evening is at leisure to relax and explore the shops and dining options.
Monday January 30th, 2023
Today we will enjoy a full day tour of Iguazu Falls, the widest falls in the world.
Straddling the border of Brazil and Argentina, the spectacular Iguazu Falls (also known as Foz do Iguaçu in Portuguese) comprise more than 200 separate cascades powered by the rushing Iguazu River. This world-famous natural wonder is not to be missed when visiting Argentina.
.
The guide will pick us up this morning from our accommodation. .
We will travel with a professional guide to the national park on the Argentinian side of the falls..
Inside the park the real experience will start! We will board a train from the Visitors Center that goes to our first stop, the “Garganta del Diablo” station, where a 1000 meters (approx. 300 feet) path leads us to the biggest falls of the waterfall system.
For the ultimate Iguazu experience, step out on an observation deck above the thundering Devil's Throat (Garganta del Diablo), where the river makes its initial descent more than 200 feet (60 meters) down around a powerful, crescent-shaped cascade. From this vantage point, you can see across the river into Brazil
Once you are back from the observation deck, we will take the train to the “Cataratas” Station in order to start the Upper Path, a short walk of approx. 300 feet that will take us to the rest of the most important falls of the park, such us “Tres Hermanas and Bosetti”. After this walk, we will have time to have lunch at one of the restaurants located inside the park (not included). Once lunch is over,: • we will take an amazing boat ride and get much closer right up to the edge of the waterfalls, for a wild (and wet) experience which provides a great way to cool off from the hot South American Summer sun.
After our boat ride we will exit the park and be returned to our hotel for the evening at leisure.
