On your spin through this must-see neighborhood, see the Chinese markets and coffee shops, and admire the distinctly Eastern architectural designs. Chinatown Vancouver is also home to the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Chinese Garden, an authentic 15th century-inspired haven of tranquility. 

Canada Place

If sustainable architecture is of interest to you, your jaw will drop when you see the buildings of the Vancouver Convention Centre. Even though the original East Building at Canada Place is an impressive sight on its own, the West Building, constructed in 2002, is of a design that will inspire the environmentalist in everyone. You may notice the "living roof" covered in vegetation, but what you won't see is that the building's waste water is treated and recycled for irrigation of the roof. You also won't be able to see the building's LEED Platinum certification in sustainable design, or the building's PowerSmart designation, or it's GO GREEN certification for environmental best practices, but they are indeed all there!

Gastown

For Vancouver’s 19th-century settlers, Gastown is where it all began. At just under a mile long, the Kenai Nature Trail is the perfect short hike to introduce you to Alaska’s beauty directly from the comfort of the lodge.

If you wish, take a relaxing stroll along this scenic nature trail as a way to enjoy the local scenery yourself, or as a great way to warm up for longer hiking trails nearby, such as the four-hour guided Kenai Nature Hike or the gold-panning  Backcountry Prospecting tour, which you can book through the front desk of Kenai Lodge.

The Kenai Nature Trail meanders through spruce trees and along the bluff of the spectacular blue-green Kenai River, offering the opportunity to view some of Alaska’s native birds, such as majestic bald eagles, three species of ptarmigans and Arctic terns. A half-mile trail loop also is available. The trail is not difficult, but we recommend good walking shoes.

You haven’t fully experienced Alaska unless you’ve been to Denali National Park. Its boundaries encompass an impressive six million acres — the size of the state of Massachusetts. Home to Denali, North America’s highest peak towers an unbelievable 20,310 feet in the sky. This morning is at leisure to take optional excursions or explore at your own pace.    The lodge offers a shuttle taking you the short one mile into Denali National Park if you wish to explore this morning inside the park yourself.

This afternoon, we will enjoy Denali National Park on the Natural History Tour, included by Princess Cruises, watching for glimpses of Denali as well as Denali's "Big Five"; moose, caribou, bears, wolves and Dall sheep.

Sun, Jun 2,2024    -   Fairbanks

Mid-morning coach to Fairbanks for a 1-night stay.

This afternoon we will enjoy an included four hour river boat cruise on an authentic Sternwheeler Riverboat down the Chena River. The evening is at leisure in Fairbanks.

Enjoy a cruise on the Chena and Tanana rivers aboard an authentic sternwheeler and watch a bush pilot take off and land from a riverbank landing strip. From late June through early August, these waters teem with salmon. As the paddle wheel continues to churn the waters, witness the “wedding of the rivers.” When the clear waters of the Chena meet the glacier-fed Tanana, the result is clouds of silt that rise and fall over the river. Make a stop at the home of a late four-time Iditarod champion, meet some winning sled dogs and witness a sled-dog demonstration. Next, you’ll disembark the sternwheeler for a guided tour through a replica of an Athabascan Indian Village where you will learn about local life in depth.

In 1880, it was slow going for Joe Juneau and Richard Harris as they searched for gold with the help of Native guides. After climbing mountains, forging streams and facing countless difficulties, they found nuggets "as large as beans."

From their discovery came three of the largest gold mines in the world. By the end of World War II, more than $150 million in gold had been mined. Eventually the mines closed, but the town Joe Juneau founded became the capital of Alaska and the business of gold was replaced by the business of government.

Some 30,000 people live in Juneau. Its total area makes it one of the biggest towns, in size, in the world. Only Kiruna, Sweden, and Sitka, Alaska, exceed Juneau's 3,248 square miles.

Skagway was the gateway to the gold fields for the thousands who flocked to Alaska and the Yukon with the hope of striking it rich. Skagway may have boasted the shortest route to the Klondike, but it wasn't the easiest.

Over 100 years ago, the White Pass route through the Coast Mountains and the shorter but steeper Chilkoot Trail were used by countless stampeders. Many a would-be miner perished on the treacherous Chilkoot Trail.

The gold rush was a boon and by 1898, Skagway was Alaska's largest town with a population of about 20,000. Hotels, saloons, dance halls and gambling houses prospered. But when the gold yield dwindled in 1900, so did the population as miners quickly shifted to new finds in Nome.

Today, Skagway has less than 1,000 residents. It still retains the flavor of the gold rush era.

Discovered in the northwest corner of Prince William Sound during an 1899 research expedition, spectacular College Fjord and its glaciers were named after prestigious east coast schools by the college professors who first laid eyes upon their majesty. Stretching for miles, these massive rivers of ice tumble down from mountains and through valleys, dipping into the pristine waters of the fjord. There you'll have a chance to watch the awe-inspiring process of glaciers calving, or dropping enormous pillars of ice into the sea, as they crack and land with a thunderous splash – a once-in-a-lifetime experience not to be missed!

College Fjord not only boasts the world's largest collection of tidewater glaciers, but it features magnificent snowcapped mountains as far as the eyes can see. Located at Cooper Landing in the middle of the Kenai Peninsula, the Kenai Princess Wilderness Lodge is perched high above the beautiful turquoise waters of the Kenai River. The lodge is the base for many wilderness activities and the starting point for the scenic drive to Seward, gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park. Cooper Landing was first settled by the Kenaitze Indians, who set up fish camps along the upper Kenai River. More recently, Cooper Landing was the site of the first gold discovery in Alaska in 1848, the year before the California Gold Rush. Early Russians discovered the gold but proved more interested in the fur trade. From Cooper Landing, the Kenai River flows 75 miles before entering Cook Inlet. World-famous fishing, scenic float trips and hiking are all located just a short distance from the lodge's front door.
