Port descriptions:

Port

Santorini

Of all the Cyclades Islands, Santorini is often considered the most dramatic with its dark landscape and iconic whitewashed buildings. The rich soil is ideal for grapes and local vines produce a cherished crop known for its special volcanic taste. Picturesque "Thíra," or Fira Town, laid out along the edge of a cliff at the rim of the now extinct caldera, exudes an easy charm.

Port

Rhodes, Greece

Rich with natural beauty and colorful history, Rhodes represents one of the most architecturally varied locations in Europe. Hellenistic, Byzantine, Medieval and Turkish influences intermingle with abundant sunshine and dry air to cast a magnificent light over the island that the ancients dedicated to Apollo, the God of Light. High on a cliff, the ruins of the Temple of Athena sit amidst the beautifully preserved Acropolis at Lindos.

Port

Valletta, (Island Nation of Malta)

A treasure trove of cultures, Valletta is a monument to the past, founded in 1566 by the Grand Master of the Knights of St. John. Be sure to see the Magisterial Palace and St. John's Cathedral, lavishly decorated with the coats of arms and banners of the crusading knights. Beyond Valletta, the countryside, although austere and rocky, has a special charm.

Port

Taormina/Giardini Naxos (Sicily)

The largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily was for centuries the center of the known world. Its unique geographic position made the island vulnerable to attacks, while also making it a meeting place of Mediterranean civilizations, a bridge between the East and West. Situated at the foot of Mt. Etna, Taormina embodies the essence of Sicily.

Port

Sorrento

Dramatic bluffs and craggy cliffs draped with flowing pink blossoms are the welcoming vision to this romantic port renowned for its serene way of life.
It is the gateway point of the Amalfi Coast with shore excursions to explore the stunning scenery along the Amalfi Coast, visit its quaint villages, or take an excursion to visit the equally stunning island of Capri, or the ancient ruins of Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius.

Perched atop cliffs that separate the town from its busy marinas, Sorrento is known for sweeping water views and Piazza Tasso, a cafe-lined square. The historic center is a warren of narrow alleys that's home to the Chiesa di San Francesco, a 14th-century church with a tranquil cloister.

The Amalfi Coast is a 50-kilometer stretch of coastline along the southern edge of Italy’s Sorrentine Peninsula, in the Campania region. It’s a popular holiday destination, with sheer cliffs and a rugged shoreline dotted with small beaches and pastel-colored fishing villages. The coastal road between the port city of Salerno and cliff top Sorrento winds past grand villas, terraced vineyards and Cliffside lemon groves

Landscape of Meteora cliffs atop which several monasteries are located

Meteora is dominated by a series of giant rock formations in central Greece hosting one of the largest and most precipitously built complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries, second in importance only to Mount Athos.[2] The six remaining (of an original twenty four) monasteries are built into and atop towering cliffs on immense natural pillars that dominate the local area. It is located near the town of Kalambaka at the northwestern edge of the Plain of Thessaly near the Pineios river and Pindus Mountains.

Meteora is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List

At their peak in the sixteenth century there were 24 monasteries at Meteora in Greece. They were created to serve monks and nuns following the teachings of the Eastern Orthodox Church. Much of the architecture of these buildings is Athonite in origin. Today there are six still functioning, while the remainder are largely in ruin. Perched onto high cliffs, they are now accessible by staircases and pathways cut into the rock formations.

Of the six functioning monasteries, the Holy Monastery of St. Stephen and the Holy Monastery of Roussanou are inhabited by nuns while the remainder are inhabited by monks. The total monastic population of the Meteora monasteries in 2015 was 56, comprising 15 monks in four monasteries and 41 nuns in two monasteries. The monasteries are now tourist attractions and are stunning to witness and amazing to experience these still functioning monasteries atop the Meteora cliffs.

The drive is 3 hours and we will enjoy a We will enjoy a tour of two or more of the monasteries.  The four major monasteries at Meteora are

The Monastery of Great Meteoron - This is the largest of the monasteries located at Meteora, although in 2015 there were only three monks in residence. It was erected in the mid-fourteenth century and was the subject of restoration and embellishment projects in 1483 and 1552. One building serves as the main museum for tourists. The Katholikon (main church), consecrated in honour of the Transfiguration of Jesus was erected in the middle of the fourteenth century and 1387/88 and decorated in 1483 and 1552.[1

The Monastery of Varlaam – The Monastery of Varlaam is the second largest monastery in the Meteora complex, and in 2015 had the largest number of monks (seven) of the monasteries for men. It was built in 1541 and embellished in 1548. A church, dedicated to All Saints, is in the Athonite type (cross-in-square with dome and choirs), with spacious exonarthex (lite) is surrounded by a dome. It was built in 1541-42 and decorated in 1548, while the exonarthex was decorated in 1566. The old refectory is used as a museum while north of the church is the parekklesion of the Three Bishops, built in 1627 and decorated in 1637.[15]

The Monastery of Rousanou/St. Barbara[15] was founded in the middle of the sixteenth century and decorated in 1560. Today it is a flourishing nunnery with 13 nuns in residence in 2015.

The Monastery of the Holy Trinity is on top of the cliffs. It was built in 1475 and was remodeled in 1684, 1689, 1692, 1741.[15] There were four monks in residence in 2015
