October 29th – Santiago De CubaToday we arrive at our first port of call on the island nation of Cuba.
One of the most interesting and historically significant places in Cuba is Santiago de Cuba.

Welcome to Santiago de Cuba, capital of the island’s “Wild East” and its glittering cultural nerve center, one that’s core to the evolution of Cuban architecture, literature and music.

This is the site of the only land battle of the Spanish-American War where, on July 1, 1898, flanked by his rough riders, Teddy Roosevelt led a victorious cavalry charge against the Spanish. Loma de San Juan is also the home of the Unknown Mambi Soldier.

Founded by Spanish conquistador Diego Velazquez de Cuellar in 1514, Santiago was the capital of the Spanish colony of Cuba from 1522 until 1589. Today, Santiago remains the most important urban area outside of Havana, and is home to the birth of most forms of Cuba’s long-lasting and globally renowned music. Visitors from around the world come to enjoy the music originating in Santiago.

Of more political importance, Santiago is known for being the Cradle of the Revolution. It was here, in 1953, Fidel Castro led an ill-prepared attack on Batistas Barracks at Moncada. And finally, a few years later after successfully toppling Batista and his dictatorship, Castro gave his victory speech in Parque Cespedes in Santiago.

The region is well known for many other things. There are the ruins of French coffee plantations to the east of the city in the mountains that are recognized by UNESCO as a world cultural heritage site. The famed Cuban cigar has deep-rooted tradition in Santiago, as does the production of rum. Both a cigar factory, and rum distillery can be found in Santiago.

This region has the largest concentration of Afro-Cubans and is the center for Afro-Cuban culture. No doubt this has influenced the proliferation of music from the area over the centuries. Several music venues are to be found here, showcasing the diverse range and forms of Cuban music. There is even an outlet of the Tropicana night club.

Taste Cuban rum at the spot where Bacardi made his first batch. Stand before the graves of national heroes in Santa Ifigenia Cemetery. Or take the adventure offshore as you kayak the bay.

Step out for a walk through bustling Parque Cespedes, one of the city’s main plazas. Admire colonial City Hall and see the ancient Casa Velazquez mansion. Take a snapshot of the Baroque cathedral— and get lost in the romantic melodies of live music splayed throughout Santiago’s lively streets.

Behold Castillo de San Pedro de la Roca del Morro, a UNESCO World Heritage Site sitting high above Santiago harbor. Explore its time-worn walls while learning about its defensive legacy during pirate times and the Spanish-American War. Then hear the cannons fire at sunset.

Description: Ropa Vieja, which is white rice with shredded beef, is a local cuisine in Santiago, Cuba

Local restaurants offer multi-course Comida Criollo menus, and authentic dishes can also be enjoyed in family homes, served by private paladares. Try Cuban staples like ropa vieja (stewed beef) and tostones (fried plantain patties). Sip rocio con gallo (coffee with rum) or a milkshake at the legendary La Arboleda. Top it off with minty mojitos at a rooftop bar overlooking the city.

October 30th – At Sea – Enjoy another fun in the sun day at sea onboard our ship to relax, sunbathe, swim, or soak in the jacuzzis.  Visit the spa, the gym or one of the onboard activities.

Havana, Cuba
7:00 AM
5:00 PM

Step into a time warp where classic cars, stately squares, and crumbling estates hint at a history begging to be discovered. Havana may be a look into the past, but its iconic music, distinctive culture, and nostalgic allure never get old.

Join us today for an incredible private group shore excursion of Havana  Today’s tour is included is your cruise package

Today’s tour:  hemmingway’s havana
For over 30 years Hemingway and Havana have had a mythic relationship. Cuba played such an important part of Hemingway's life that he wrote 7 books there, among them 'The Old Man and the Sea', 'Islands in the Stream' and 'Movable Feast'. His home, just outside of the city of Havana, was called La Finca Vigía, which means The Lookout. The home was left to the Cuban people and it has undergone some restoration. It is full of books, lots of knickknacks and an old Victrola along with favorite records.

In May, 2006 Cuba sent 11,000 of Hemingway's private documents to the JFK Presidential Library in America for digitalization after agreeing, in 2002, to allow the US to fund a project to digitalize those left in the basement of the home. This literary treasure trove, including a previously unseen epilogue for For Whom the Bell Tolls, was finally made available online in January 2009. (Please refer to Restrictions in reference to the access to the home.)

There is much more that delivers the atmosphere of past attraction of the author and you will move on to the town of Cojimar, just a short ride away. It is interesting to see the lovely homes in town as you head for Hemingway's favorite bar, the inspiration for 'The Old Man and the Sea'. Las Terraza is loaded with photographs from that time period and a table overlooking the sea was the spot that Hemingway favored. It was also the favorite of his captain, the late Gregorio Fuentes, to whom he left his boat. You will take a short walk to the waterfront where a statue of Hemingway was created from old anchors, props, and tools salvaged by local fishermen to honor his memory.

Heading back to the city, you will be able to follow Hemingway's trail in Old Havana. A stop at the Hotel Ambos Mundos and Ernest's room #511, you can see where Hemingway stayed in the 1930s before he bought his home. It is easy to imagine life at that time, as the décor of the restaurant-bar has retained the atmosphere of the past.

Two places are nearby with 2 famous and favorite drinks - la Bodeguita del Medio is famous for its mojitos and the Floridita for its superb daiquiris!

You can hang out here and try them both, and find your way back on your own, an easy walk to the pier and many of the hotels.

We will make arrangements for meaningful dialogue with locals throughout your day! These memories and personal interactions will last a lifetime.  This private tour of Havana is fully licensed by the US government under the strict U.S. guidelines introduced by the U.S. government on November 9th, 2017.

This excursion runs from 11am-3pm, allowing you time both before and after our tour to explore a bit of Havana at your leisure on your own if you wish.  Our ship sails at 5pm and all passengers must be back on board by 4:30pm.

Tonight we will enjoy a fabulous Halloween party on our ship.  We encourage everyone to bring a Halloween costume and join us for a fun time.

November 1st – today our cruise ends and you can either make your own way to the airport or purchase a transport seat on one of RCCL’s buses going regularly from the ship to the airport.
