Dürnstein

A Postcard-Worthy European Town

Considered one of the most visited tourist spots in the Wachau Valley, Durnstein is in a robust wine-growing region sitting alongside the Danube river. Durnstein Castle, the region's famous architectural highlight, sits atop a rocky mountain, high above the Danube, at its base. Durnstein's beauty is enhanced by verdant forests, rolling hills, and thriving vineyards that surround the town. Sip some of the region's local wines and enjoy a leisurely day in this postcard-worthy European town.

INCLUDED (FREE) SHORE EXCURSIONS CHOICES TODAY

(choice 1) Durnstein Walking Tour and Monastery

Become acquainted with the enchanting town of Dürnstein during a guided walk and visit to its stately landmark, Dürnstein Abbey.

Beginning from your docked river yacht, take a stroll through the beautiful village of Dürnstein. Pass its most significant sites and hear legends about the town, its ruined castle and King Richard I of England, also known as Richard the Lion heart. Reaching Dürnstein Abbey, enjoy an interior visit to this picturesque treasure.

Established in 1410 and rebuilt in 1710 in the elaborate Baroque style, the abbey is the centerpiece of the town’s photogenic riverside scene. The abbey’s most notable feature, its ornate blue tower, rises proudly above the city. Enjoy some time at leisure to browse the town’s shops or relax at a café to savor Dürnstein’s rich history and charming atmosphere before returning by foot to your Crystal vessel.

Important Notes:

As this excursion involves continuous walking over uneven surfaces in the old city, it is not recommended for guests with walking difficulties. Guests should be aware that this excursion involves substantial walking for a period of approximately 60 minutes over a distance of about one mile. It is recommended that guests dress in casual clothing and wear flat, comfortable shoes

· Level: Moderate
· Walking Type: Medium
· Approximate Duration: 2 Hours

(Free excursion choice 2) Hike to Dürnstein Castle Ruins

A combination history lesson and exercise jaunt, this trek up to the ruins of Dürnstein Castle affords a chance to stretch your legs and gaze at views stretching out over the Wachau Valle

Setting out from your Crystal river yacht, follow your guide by foot along the riverbank and the ancient town walls before beginning the uphill hike to the castle. During the next 30 to 45 minutes, make some stops to admire the scenery and hear your guide regale you with tales of the town of Dürnstein, its ruined castle, and the story of Richard the Lion heart. Dürnstein was first mentioned in 1192, when Leopold V, Duke of Austria, held King Richard I of England, also known as Richard the Lion heart, captive after their dispute during the Third Crusade.

Today, only the whisper of the legend and the crumbling ruins of the castle remain, spellbinding reminders of a bygone time. The trail leads you through some of the most beautiful scenic outlooks of the Wachau Valley and up to the castle remnants, where you will marvel at its still-imposing stature and the Valley vistas. After taking in views from high above, take the walk back into town, passing the most important sites of Dürnstein, including Dürnstein Abbey, founded in 1410 and rebuilt in the grand Baroque style in 1710. Wrapping up your invigorating trek, pause for refreshments before returning to your Crystal river yacht.

The Wachau Valley is known for its rolling hills, vineyards and fortresses. Enjoy scenic views of the hillsides, fortresses and the Fall Colors of the season, as we sail through the Wachau Valley

As the Danube literally squeezes itself through between cliffs and hills, the natural beauty of this valley is stunning. On top of this, imagine dry-stone terraces cut into the slopes, and you’ll find, arguably, the most scenic section of the Danube. Travel author Rick Steves said the Wachau Valley along the Austrian Danube is “as pretty as river valleys come”.

Lights on the GrabenNew Year’s Eve in Vienna

Time to swap Christmas baubles for palace balls, punch for sparkling wine, and sausages for…nope, keep the sausages. It’s New Year’s Eve in Vienna.

New Year’s Eve in Vienna is one of the most lively and action packed evenings across the whole of Europe, with a street party and spectacular fireworks, fabulous classical concerts and fine dining gala dinner events taking place across the city.

HOW IS NEW YEAR’S EVE CELEBRATED IN VIENNA
?

New Year’s Eve is known as Silvester in Austria. It’s the Roman Catholic feast day of the same-named pope and saint, who died on December 31st, AD 335. None of which has any relevance, though, to how Vienna celebrates the turn of the year.

People party just like the rest of the world. Aside from parties, though, Vienna has one or two little traditions not shared by such cities as New York, London or Tokyo.

At midnight itself, the giant Pummerin bell of Vienna’s St Stephen’s cathedral then rings in the New Year

Once the last echoes of the Pummerin fade away, the celebration kicks into another gear, as fireworks across the city burst into action.

Everyone dances in the New Year as lights explode across the night sky. Some dance to the traditional “Blue Danube”, while others choose a more upbeat dance style.  Whatever your dance or celebration mode of choice, it will be welcomed in the celebratory mood of New Year’s Eve in Vienna!

The fireworks make quite a sight

New Year's Eve fireworks
FIREWORKS LIGHT UP THE SKY OVER VIENNA

THE SILVESTERPFAD

New Year’s Eve in Vienna is all about the Silvesterpfad, which translates literally as the “New Year’s Eve trail”.

The name covers a series of events and activities around the city center that typically begin at 2pm on December 31st and run through to 2am the next day

The city puts up temporary stages, so live performers, bands, orchestras, and DJs can entertain everyone until midnight and beyond.

Dozens of food stands ensure you don’t go hungry or thirsty.

NEW YEAR MARKETS

Vienna is, of course, famous for its Christmas markets, but why stop there? Why indeed.

A couple of these markets morph into New Year alternatives (known by various German words, including NeujahrsmarktSilvestermarkt, and Silvesterdorf) from around December 27th.

At the best ones, you get all the sights, sounds, smells, and tastes that make the Christmas versions so popular, but without the nagging sense of guilt that you ought to buy a few presents while there.

Several such markets dot the city, but the three big ones are:

Even after 25 years in the city, I still love browsing these seasonal markets and enjoying a warming mug of Glühwein or similar.
(Read more about Vienna’s New Year markets.)

OTHER NEW YEAR EVENTS IN VIENNA

The big traditional event is the New Year’s Concert given by the world-famous Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra at the Musikverein. What few people know is there are actually three concerts with the same program:

  • A “preview performance” on Dec 30
  • A Silvesterkonzert on Dec 31
  • The actual New Year’s Concert on Jan 1st

You’d think tickets would be astronomically expensive and some are, but prices actually start from around €20. Vienna has a strong tradition of ensuring access for (almost) anyone to cultural activities like opera and concerts.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Typically, the municipal transport services (Wiener Linien) extend operations for New Year’s Eve. So the subway lines run through the night at short intervals,

USEFUL GERMAN PHRASES

How about a couple of useful New Year phrases in German:

  • Happy New Year / “guten Rutsch ins neue Jahr” (often shortened to just “guten Rutsch”)
  • Sorry, I can’t hear you over the noise of the fireworks / “Ich kann Sie nicht hören wegen der Kracher

About our ship:

Crystal Mozart

The award-winning Crystal Mozart is known as the “Queen of the Danube” and Europe’s largest river ship, hosting you in supremely casual elegance with the largest suites among all European river ships. She is an All Suite vessel and is known for exceptional service and cuisine. Enjoy an indulgent spa, fitness center, full promenade and more. She is double the width of the traditional river boats, thus able to offer a greater array of amenities onboard. Although being young, having been introduced as recently as 2016, she was also given a large upgrade in early 2020, bring more light into interior spaces and outfit every space in a stunning contemporary design. She is one of the very few riverboats to also be fitted with an elevator, providing more ease of moving between its four decks.
92 crew members are on hand to take care of just 120 passengers, making for outstanding service.

Crystal thought about what today's luxury traveler expects and desires in a vacation and tried to incorporate those things into the ship. Passengers have plenty of choice; whether it's the option of three dining venues plus a snack station and room service, deciding among several complimentary tours or a few more extra-fee ones in every port. Separate spa, salon and fitness center spaces put most other river ships to shame in terms of size and style. High-tech amenities are everywhere, from interactive TVs to iPads in every stateroom and customizable toiletries. No one's forced to adhere to a schedule; dinner is truly open seating, allowing diners to arrive at any time during operating hours, and tours depart in the morning and afternoon. Food is farm-to-table -- locally sourced from farms within just hours of the ports, making it oh so fresh.

The ship's interiors are just stunning. Thought was put into every space. . A faux fireplace (which uses water mist and LED lights to create the impression of flames) gives atmosphere to a sitting area at the top of a stairway. Cool, modern rocking chairs balanced by circular hanging lights provide seating by the indoor pool. Beanbag chairs and more angular patio chairs provide pops of color to the top deck, while a living garden of herbs and plants add some life to the alfresco lounge space.

The ship has 4 restaurants serving only the freshest locally sourced food.

Passenger count: The cruise holds Only 120 passengers on the ship

Staff to Guest ratio: 1 to 1.4

All shore excursions have a maximum of 20 guests per each professional guide, thus ensuring you the most personal attention, where you will never be lost in a crowd like on the large mega cruise ships.

As the shore excursions are included in each port, we will email our group approx. five to six months prior to sailing with a list of all the free excursions in each port and the specific shore excursions that our group leader recommends to our passengers and will also personally be participating on each day. Each of our passengers is then free to either email us back to sign you up for all of those group excursions, or you can personally select your own excursion choices for each port and have them booked for you in advance as well.

We will have group dinners each evening at a designated time and you are also free to dine at any other time each evening as well if you wish.
