POLAR BEARS AND BELUGA WHALES OF CANADA
AN UP CLOSE OBSERVATION EXPERIENCE
AUGUST 4-10, 2020
Description: Polar Bears of Churchill Manitoba Description: Polar Bears of Churchill Manitoba Description: Beluga tail

Enjoy an unforgettable experience viewing polar bears, Beluga Whales and other wildlife in their own natural habitats.    You don’t have to travel far to see all of this – Its all right here in North America!

Our professional local guides will take you in a customized vessel certified by Transport Canada on an adventure to experience one of the more remote Polar Bear viewing areas on the west side of Hudson Bay. You will have the opportunity to view polar bears in their summer environment, swimming and walking around the rocks and wildflowers. Weather and wildlife permitting, you will disembark the boat and walk where polar bears roam.

Along the same shoreline, hundreds of Beluga Whales come to feed, mate and give birth in the warm, shallow near-coastal waters. Our Beluga Whale Boat/Fort Tour will focus on viewing the beautiful beluga whales in their natural habitat in the Churchill River and into the Hudson Bay area as they feed on schools of caplin, arctic char and brook trout. We will also go ashore for a walking tour of the historic Prince of Wales Fort. Kayaking or AquaGliding with the whales are available as optional extras.

(The order of the daily tours is subject to change depending on weather)

  • What are the typical temperatures in Churchill in June, July, August?

The temperatures in June, July and August can range from 10 to 25 degrees Celsius Which is between 50 and 77 F.

  • What are the bugs like in Churchill during mid to late summer?

Each summer is different for bugs. In years of little rain we hardly notice them. Early summer seems, in general, to have more bugs.  Midsummer and late summer generally have fewer bugs (So August and September are the best months to visit). Good bug spray that contains 'Deet' as a main ingredient works best to keep bugs away during when they are present.

What should I pack for the trip?

The weather in the summer can vary quite significantly. It can feel like summer and fall in the same day so both summer and fall clothing are recommended. We recommend packing the following:

    • T-shirts and shorts for the summer weather days
    • Loose fitting clothing, long socks, closed-toed shoes and a long-sleeved shirt and pants for cooler days or bug days
    • A wind breaker/sweatshirt/fall jacket for possible cool days
    • Hiking shoes or runners. Stay away from sandals in case of bug days
    • Thermal under clothing, a touque (a close fitting hat covering your ears), mittens or gloves for the boat tours
    • A good shade hat, sun glasses, binoculars, camera
    • It is wise to bring a good bug spray that contains DEET as a main ingredient
    • Spare batteries for each camera type you bring
    • Charging cords for laptops, cell phones, tablets
    • We also recommend bringing along a small carry-on bag with your absolute necessities just in case your luggage makes it to Churchill after you do

About Lazy Bear Lodge
At Lazy Bear Lodge, the thrill of the arctic doesn't end when you return to the Lodge. That's because the Lodge itself is an authentic northern wonder!

This is no regular log cabin. The timber was reclaimed from a fire in the boreal forest. Using hand tools, the logs fit together so well as to appear as if they were melted into each other. The windows were recycled from an 1800's Hudson Bay Trading Post, and if you look closely, you'll see the characteristic wave of the old glass.

Come inside and feel the warmth of the massive stone fireplace, crafted from a 20,000 pound block of stone and mortar. Even the floor came from recycled Douglas Fir from the Canadian National Railway warehouse built in the early 1920's.

The rooms give a warm and inviting feel that you would expect from a cozy log cabin style lodge.

The stay at the Lazy Bear Lodge is a beautiful cozy Arctic dream and the perfect complement to your Polar bear and whale watching trip of a lifetime.

We are very pleased that National Geographic Traveler magazine has selected Lazy Bear Lodge as one of its top hotels. The vetting panel of travel experts includes veteran journalists, seasoned road warriors, and local experts.

Dining at Lazy Bear Lodge

Comfortable, hand-built log furnishings await you at the end of your day's adventures in the unique dining room. Indigenous foods such as Braised Peppered Elk, Arctic Char and Manitoba Bison grace the tables. Finding foods from this seemingly barren landscape may seem impossible; 15 kinds of wild berries and numerous species of mushrooms can be gathered in the area. The made-from-scratch main entrees provide a culinary adventure each day.

Wally and Dawn have recently added a greenhouse, allowing chefs to use local, fresh organic produce to create delectable offerings for our dining room guests.

  • Summer dining hours at lazy Bear Lodge are 7 A.M. to 9 P.M., 7 days a week

Our local tour guiding team at the Lazy Bear Lodge is headed by Wally, the owner of the lodge and of our local Churchill tour team. Wally, born in Manitoba, has worked his entire adult life In Churchill's Polar Bear tour industry, beginning as a guide in the early 1980's.  His passionate care for the abundance of Arctic wildlife can be seen in every part of the Lodge's operational mandate of sustainable tourism.
