Our tour of this amazing island nation begins today, as we will be picked up this morning by our private group vehicle and dedicated local bi lingual English speaking private tour manager. Our tour manager will also provide complimentary bottled water in our vehicle each day for our refreshment.

As we check out of our hotel today, passengers can choose, if desired, to leave any items securely in storage at this hotel, as we will be returning here for the last night of our Sri Lanka tour.

We will be driven this morning to the beautiful Kandy region of the island where we will enjoy a visit to the Millennium Elephant Foundation near Pinnawala.

Here we will enjoy an escorted short walk to the river (a few hundred meters, or only about 1000 feet). We will be joined on our walk by the Elephants And each elephant will also be joined by its own care taker walking with the team too.

Once we reach the river the elephants come to a relaxed position laying its body on the water, so guests, assisted by the elephant care taker, can use the specially provided elephant bathing brush for the unique experience of bathing the elephant in the river.

The water level of the river will be up to knee level of the passengers and thus the lower part of our bodies will be wet. If the guests wish, they can also let the Elephant bathe them back using its trunk. That's something normally they do and each guest can decide at that time if they would like to experience it, by simply telling the elephant’s care taker in the water and upon choosing to do so, the guest will receive the bathing of the refreshing river water from the elephant’s trunk.

Elephants in the river near Pinnawala

Day 03 - Wednesday February 23rd (B,L)

Sigiriya Rock Fortress, Dambulla Cave Temple and Minneriya National Park Wild Life Jeep Safari

We will start traveling towards Dambulla and Sigiriya after the breakfast included at the hotel.

Our first stop will be at Sigiriya. The Sigiriya Ancient Rock Fortress is one of the most important things to visit / see in this country. It is a UNESCO Heritage site and it is considered by many locals as the ‘8th wonder of the world’.

This ancient palace and fortress complex has significant archaeological importance and attracts thousands of tourists every year. It is probably the most visited tourist destination of Sri Lanka.

The palace is located in the heart of the island on a massive rocky plateau 370 meters (approx. 1100 feet) above the sea level.

Sigiriya rock plateau, formed from magma of an extinct volcano, is 200 meters (approx.. 600 feet) higher than the surrounding jungles.

The fortress complex includes remnants of a ruined palace, surrounded by an extensive network of fortifications, vast gardens, ponds, canals, alleys and fountains.

The surrounding territories of Sigiriya were inhabited for several thousand years.

From the 3rd century BC the rocky plateau of Sigiriya served as a monastery. In the second half of the 5th century, King Kasyapa decided to construct a royal residence here.

After his death, Sigiriya again became a Buddhist monastery until the 14th century, when it was abandoned.

The main entrance is located in the northern side of the rock.

It was designed in the form of a huge stone lion, whose feet have survived up to today but the upper parts of the body were destroyed.

Thanks to this lion, the palace fortress was named Sigiriya. The term Sigiriya originates from the word Sihagri, i.e. Lion Rock.

Sigiriya Lion Claws

The buildings and gardens of Sigiriya show that the creators of this amazing architectural monument used unique and creative technical skills and technologies.

The construction of such a monument on a massive rock approximately 200 meters higher from the surrounding landscape required advanced architectural and engineering skills.

The gardens of Sigiriya are among the oldest landscaped gardens in the world.

Sigiriya has water gardens, cave and boulder gardens, and also terraced gardens.

They are located in the western part of the rock with a complex hydraulic system, which consists of canals, locks, lakes, dams, bridges, fountains, as well as surface and underground water pumps.

The palace and fortress complex is recognized as one of the finest examples of ancient urban planning. Considering the uniqueness of Sigiriya, UNESCO declared it a World Heritage site in 1982. Sigiriya is an unmatched combination of urban planning, water engineering, horticulture and arts.

The western wall of Sigiriya was almost entirely covered by frescoes, created during the reign of Kasyapa. Eighteen frescoes have survived to this day.

The frescoes depict nude females and are considered to be either the portraits of Kasyapa’s wives and concubines or priestesses performing religious rituals.

Despite the unknown identity of the females depicted in the frescoes, these unique ancient paintings celebrate female beauty and have incredible historical significance to the local people.

Sweeping Stroke Paintings at Sigiriya Rock Fortress

One of the most striking features of Sigiriya is its Mirror wall.

In the old days it was polished so thoroughly that the king could see his reflection in it.

The Mirror wall is painted with inscriptions and poems written by the visitors of Sigiriya.

The most ancient inscriptions are dated from the 8th century.

These inscriptions are proving that Sigiriya was a tourist destination more than a thousand years ago. Today, painting on the wall is strictly prohibited.

Sigiriya Mirror Wall

There are many steps to reach the top with plenty to see along the walk. Visitors can walk as far up as desired and explore the many attractions at each stop along the steps to the top, or just explore the sites, pools, and gardens at the base of the fortress.

Visitors who reach the top are rewarded with a spectacular view.

Sigiriya Citadel Rock

Our next visit is to the Village Safari at Sigiriya with a Sri Lankan traditional lunch provided to visitors here.

We will take a tour through this for you to get an insight about the life style of Sri Lankans. Their activities, the way they make local food, agriculture activities etc.

Next we will Minneriya National Park for a three hour off road jeep Safari

This is an exciting and unique off road experience in the Sri Lanka jungle.

You will be taken on a jeep Safari tour in the Minneriya National Park, one of the biggest wildlife reservoirs in Sri Lanka. You will be able to see large herds of Elephants in their natural behavior together with other animals.

Safari jeeps used will be with capacity of 6 passengers using 3 gradually raised rows with 2 seats per row, so that every passenger has a seat with open air viewing to allow for the best photo opps. of the magnificent wildlife. It takes around 3 hours to complete the safari experience and then we start heading back to Kandy after the safari at Minneriya.

We will visit the Dambulla Cave Temples on our way back. Dambulla Cave Temple is one of the most beautiful old temples of Sri Lanka, well known for it's paintings.

The Cave of the Great Kings

The Buddhist temple complex of Dambulla consists of five cave temples carved under a very large overhanging rock. The temples were carved out over several centuries, but the oldest dates back to the 1st century B.C.E. The temples include numerous carved statues of Buddha, and his faithful disciple Ananda, as well as Hindu deities.

The largest of the caves is known as the Maharaja Vihara Lena, or Cave of the Great Kings, so named because the cave contains the statues of two ancient, great Sri Lankan kings—Valagambahu and Nissankamalla. Fifty or so Buddha statues, including a life-sized granite one, are all contained inside the temple as is small stupa surrounded by eleven seated Buddhas.

The cave walls and ceiling are entirely painted with paintings depicting early Buddhist historical events and murals with traditional Buddhist designs. Like all the other cave temples, this one is dimly lit, preserving the vibrant colors of the paintings and murals.

Another unusual feature of this particular cave temple is the large metal bowl that was placed inside the cave centuries ago, presumably to catch rain dripping from the cave roof. It's said that even in a severe drought, the water in the bowl does not dry up.

Dambulla is one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites located in the region known as Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle. If you ever go to Sri Lanka, you must go to Dambulla. It is a very unique and spectacular site!

Our next stop will be at the Ramboda Waterfall, a beautiful waterfall on our way to Nuwaraeliya. Relax some time at the café at the base of the falls enjoying a cup of tea or a pastry while enjoy the view overlooking the waterfall.

Rhamboda Falls is 109 meters or 358 feet tall

The Beauty of Ramboda Falls

Ramboda Falls is a spectacular tiered type of waterfall which falls in to a large basin pool. This natural pool is a popular area for swimming. Ramboda Falls stands among some of the top most beautiful waterfalls of Sri Lanka. The waterfall is surrounded by amazing landscapes which consist of hills, highlands, plains and ridges.

Our next stop is at Gregory Lake Park for a photo stop of this scenic lake vista.

We will then stop for lunch at the Grand Hotel Nuwraeliya. The first class compartment is the only compartment which provides air conditioned comfort for our three hour scenic train ride through the Sri Lanka countryside.

You are about to start enjoying the beautiful, scenic train ride. The train ride from Nanu Oya Railway Station to Ella station is considered one of the most scenic train rides in the world, offering stunning scenery along the way.

These trains are non-smoking. Our seats will be assigned and located next to each other. Our local assistant will be traveling with the group in the train to make sure that all the arrangements are in place and to communicate with our local tour manager and driver traveling by our private vehicle to the town of Ella where they will pick us up at the train station upon our train arrival in Ella.. Our local assistant will provide the assistance to all guests getting off the train and walk us to meet our local tour manager and driver at the station.

After our private vehicle leaves the Ella station following the end of our scenic train ride, we will be taken to Ravana Ella Falls, one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Sri Lanka.

It currently ranks as one of the widest falls in the country and is popular for locals and ambitious tourists to swim in.

You may see locals and ambitious tourists swimming in the rather cold waters of Ravana Ella Falls

Next we will visit the Nine Arches Bridge, a popular attraction for many travelers who visit Sri Lanka

The Nine Arches Bridge also called the Bridge in the Sky, is a viaduct bridge and is one of the best examples of colonial-era railway construction in the country. It spans 91 meters or approx. 275 feet long and is 24 meters or approx. 75 feet high.

The Nine Arches Bridge is even more impressive if one is lucky enough to view it just as a train is crossing over it.

The Sri Lanka male elephant

The high probability of experiencing these glorious creatures in their natural habitat is one of the most attractive features of the park. Multiple elephants or even herds of elephants can be spotted at Udawalawe. The chances of witnessing a herd of Sri Lankan elephants is extremely high near rivers and the reservoir of Udawalawe..

Water Buffalo, crocodile, wild boar and macaque are some of the other wildlife often seen in this national park. (It's also home to the likes of exotic birds and leopards).

Welcome to the jungle - the Yala National Park, a rather arid land with the highest density of leopards in their natural habitat in the world. It is for this reason, the most visited national park in Sri Lanka.

While the elusive cat is the star here, 215 species of birds and over 44 diverse mammals also call it home.

A safari in yala national park is an experience of epic proportions

A visit to Yala brings you up, close and personal with the untamed world of wildlife. Whether you are an avid nature lover or visiting a wildlife park for the first time, if you come here with a mind that’s eager to explore and learn, you will go away with new-found meaning to life
On morning and evening safaris you may also see elephant, sloth bear, sambar, chital, wild boar, striped necked, brown and ruddy mongoose, black-naped hare, marsh mugger crocodile and several civet species. Birding highlights include the southern sirkeer, blue-faced malkoha, yellow wattled lapwing, rufous-winged bush lark, thick-billed flower-pecker, purple sunbird, little minivet, white-rumped shama and rare black-necked stork.

Yala National Park has the highest density of leopards any place in the world

After our wildlife jeep safari we will be returned to our accommodations for dinner and the evening at leisure.
If you wish tonight, you can join us on an optional Infrared Night Safari (There is an additional cost for this night time safari activity

Optional Infrared Night Safari Drive …at Yala National Park~

The wild animals might have warmed up to human presence around their kingdom in the day, but they are unapologetically themselves at night.
The use of infrared technology along with night vision goggles ensures that the wildlife stays undisturbed by artificial lights. The experience gets more thrilling at night because of the darkness and the unrestrained behavior of the animals at those hours. A series of documentaries filmed in collaboration with National Geographic throw light on the wildlife in the dark.

Day 7 – Sunday February 27th, 2022 (B)

We will arise early this morning to enjoy the early morning wildlife safari experience in Yala National Park. We will be given a box breakfast to take with us in our jeeps and then we will be picked up and depart our resort by 5:45am for our 3 hour early morning wildlife jeep safari.

We will be back at our resort by 9:15am and we will then enjoy the full breakfast buffet provided at our resort.

When is the best time to go to Yala National Park?

Per the website whereandwhen.net

  • The best months for good weather in Yala National Park are January, February, March, August, September and December

  • On average, it is hot all year round

We will check out of our resort around 11am-noon and we will be driven again in our private group vehicle with our dedicated local tour manager, driving towards Galle on the coastal line from Yala. It’s a very beautiful journey with a view of the sea by our side. There are some beautiful beaches we will find on the way. Kalamatiyana, Weligama, Unawatuna are some of them.

We will stop to visit to the Galle Fort. This is one of the old Dutch forts built during their colonial time in Sri Lanka. It is one of the most visited sites in the southern part of the country.

At the end of the afternoon, we will enjoy a Madu River / Madol Duwa Boat Safari . This is a great experience, as you can witness a range of bird varieties and other local animals which congregate along the water and along the shore of the waterfront. Also you can get an idea about the local cinnamon industry and how it processes during our short visit to the small cinnamon islands located here.

At the end of boat tour we will be returned to our private vehicle and driven back to our Colombo area 4 star hotel for check in to the same hotel where we stayed on our first night of the trip. Guests who left any luggage or other items here upon our check out on day two will be able to reclaim those items from the hotel storage room and we will all check in for our final night stay.
