singles cruises and toursVIEW OF THE COASTLINE OF THE STUNNING CINQUE TERRE REGION OF ITALY

Join us for an incredible week of exploring the incomparable scenic beauty of the Cinque Terre and Portofino regions of Italy.

On the beautiful Italian Riviera, five villages cling alongside stunning seaside cliffs.  Known as Cinque Terre (Italian for Five Villages), they are fairy tale like visions of pastel hued homes, immaculate little churches, beaches dotted with colorful umbrellas and stunning scenery everywhere you look.

These villages are linked by ferries and trains but the best way to see these quaint seaside villages and dramatic scenery is by a network of footpaths that offer spectacular views of the Ligurian Sea, the wildflowers, olive groves and the spectacular cliffs surrounding it.

The best way to experience the breathtaking beauty of this region is by foot and our tour will feature professionally guided walks to truly experience the sights, sounds, tastes and aromas of this unparalleled region. Our walks are all at low altitudes, just a few hundred feet above sea level with very little ascent, so anyone in reasonable fitness can enjoy each day’s walk.  These professionally guided walks are each between 5 and 8 miles and all feature incredible views and plenty of stops for photos.  We will have opportunities to enjoy lunches with amazing views, local cuisine and fabulous local wines, or liquors at your leisure, during or at the end of each day’s walk. We will even have an included wine tasting to enjoy at the end of one of our walks and we will enjoy an included lunch with a panoramic view during two of our walks.

All of our walks are private for just our group and all are led by a local who will share a local’s knowledge of the region to our private group. Our group is limited to only 12 people, plus 2 trip escorts from S.C.A.T. plus our local walking guides, so our passengers on this trip have the best opportunity to experience this incredible region in the best small group environment.

We will be based the entire week in one hotel, enabling all to unpack just once and enjoy this gorgeous region of Italy. Our hotel is a short walk from charming restaurants to enjoy authentic Italian cuisines and wines with a view each evening, at your leisure and plenty of chic shopping, following our walks, if you desire, or enjoy our hotel’s indoor pool and sun terrace with Jacuzzi, to relax, after our daily walks.  Our hotel is also walking distance to the local train station, making for easy access on the one full free day in our itinerary, for you to visit any of the nearby cities, attractions or return for another day in the Cinque Terre villages at your own leisure.

Late May is the ideal period to enjoy the walks and villages of the Cinque Terre, as the flowers have just bloomed, the average daily temperature is a very comfortable 70 degrees and the summer crowds have not yet arrived.

Trip Highlights:

  • Enjoy professionally guided daily walks along coastal paths via olive groves and vineyard with breathtaking views
  • Visit some of the most picturesque and colorful villages of the stunning Cinque Terre and Liguria region
  • Our professionally guided daily walks take you from one charming village to another quaint village, through spectacular terraced landscapes overlooking the sea
  • Enjoy a visit to the Chic resort town of Portofino
  • Enjoy a free day to explore further at your own leisure to make a return visit to one of the Cinque Terre villages, or visit the towns of Lucca, Genoa or Portovenere, each filled with their own scenic treasures.

Walks on Italy's stunning Ligurian Riviera

Located on a part of Italy's most beautiful coastline, nestled between the Cinque Terre and Bay of Portofino, our base in the seaside town of Moneglia is a real treat for visitors.  On inspirational walks through hills, woodland and coastal villages we will discover why these areas have earned names such as the Gulf of the Poets. Many of the country’s most iconic trails are situated in the region of Liguria and this trip makes a great introduction to Italy with its ample opportunities for walking, relaxing and sampling delicious food and wine.

And if you wish to see more, join us for our optional 3 night pre-tour stay in the fabled city of Florence Italy.  We will enjoy 3 nights to savor the incredibly easy walkable pathways, foot bridges, galleries, art, food, wine and all that make Florence famous the world over.  We will enjoy two full day guided bus trips, one visiting the charming towns of San Gimignano, Sienna and Monteriggioni, featuring an INCLUDED Italian wine tasting and lunch, while the 2nd full day tour will take us to the independent nation of San Marino, located high on a hillside, landlocked inside of Italy itself, plus the historical Italian city of Bologna.

Day 2 - Sunday May 15th, 2022

We will walk along the coastal trail between Deiva Marina and the villages of Framura and Bonassola

This morning we take a short included train ride (approx. 30 minutes) to Deiva Marina and start our walk through holm oak forests and maquis shrub land. The walk begins with a modestly steep path, climbing up to picturesque woods of pine and strawberry trees. Our efforts will be rewarded at the top of the hill with stunning panoramic views of the coastline and the Promontory of Portofino.

From the spectacular conglomerate crags you can enjoy views on the wonderful blue sea below (Portofino Marine Reserve).  The views from the top are splendid. You can see the two bays around the promontory, from the Bay of Tigullio to Sestri Levante, from Paradise Gulf to the island of Bergeggi and, in the distance, the French island of Corsica, one of the largest in the Mediterranean.

We will then take an undulating trail that offers beautiful views over the Ligurian Sea and leads to the village of Framura, where we will stop for an included picnic lunch with a panoramic view.

Framura is a small pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea close to Portofino and Cinque Terre.  Like Cinque Terre, Framura consists of 5 small and ancient villages, close to Portofino and Cinque Terre.  The castle, cliffs, pine forests, vineyards, small beaches nestled in the coast...this is the beauty of Framura. The unique landscape of the coast is given by the high cliffs dropping into the sea, in the midst of which they form small pebble beaches. Impressive landscapes are seen around the lush vegetation overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea...

Images of Framura, the scenic town where we will enjoy our lunch break from our walk today

After the lunch break in Framura, we descend by steps almost to sea level then meander through woods until a final moderately steep climb for magnificent views of the sea. We then head to the pretty village of Bonassola before taking the train back to our hotel in Moneglia.

Meals included today: Breakfast, Lunch
Distance covered on today’s walk: 8 miles (13 km)
Total ascent: At less than 2500 feet of ascent, this day’s walk is considered modest.

Day 3 - Monday May 16th, 2022

We will take the train to Cinque Terre National Park  We will walk the stunning paths to some of Liguria's prettiest villages

Today we will set out for our first visit of the spectacular Cinque Terre (Five Lands), one of Italy's most beautiful 'works of art', declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 and part of the Cinque Terre National Park. The best way to explore these charming villages is on foot, and today we will walk on the famous Sentiero Azzurro Ligure (Ligurian Blue Path), which connects the five villages.  Today we will visit three of the five, namely Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso, and we will pass along old mule tracks, walking through terraced vineyards and olive groves.

The Blue Path is the easiest, the most famous and the most popular path in the entire Cinque Terre.

After completing some modestly steep and rocky sections, we will be rewarded with wonderful views of the colorful villages, built into the rocks facing the sea

At the end of the walk, we will catch the included short train back to Moneglia (approx.. 30 minutes) where there will be time to relax or go for a swim in the hotel’s indoor pool or relax on its sun terrace with Jacuzzi, or those wishing to remain in Cinque Terre to explore the villages, relax over a glass of local wine,  and/or enjoy shopping in the villages, you can do so and then take the easy train back to Moneglia on your own and then the scenic walk from the Moneglia train station back to our hotel (approx.. 15 minutes’ walk from the train station to our hotel) .  Tonight, enjoy at your leisure, dinner at the hotel, or a short leisurely stroll to the promenade of restaurants along the seaside.

Part of The scenic Ligurian Blue path we will be walking today

Meals included today:  Breakfast
Distance covered on today’s walk:  6 miles ( 10 km)
Total ascent today: At less than 2500 feet of ascent, this day’s walk is considered modest.

Day 4  Tuesday May 17th, 2022

We will walk on the Portofino promontory and explore the world-renowned fishing village of Portofino itself

This morning we will set out by a short included train ride (approx. 30 minutes) to Santa Margherita Ligure, a charming coastal town, where we will begin our morning walk to the picturesque fishing village of Portofino.  Famous for its pastel-colored houses and beautiful harbor, the town attracts celebrities from all over the world.  We will take a very scenic route with panoramic views and an estimated arrival time in Portofino of 1pm.  We will have approx. ninety minutes to two hours of free time to explore the village and have lunch in the village at our own leisure and then take a much shorter walk directly back to the train station to return to our hotel in Moneglia by an included train ride from Portofino SML station (approx. 45 minutes) back to our hotel.

If you have never been to Portofino, you probably have never seen a sea color of such a pure, dark emerald green. Maybe it’s the surrounding vegetation that, hanging from the hills enclosing the small bay almost to touch and caress the sea, gives the water that color. Or maybe it’s the depth of the cliffs under the water that contributes to the games that the sunlight plays with the sea. Whatever the reason, the experience is unique.

If you prefer to remain in Portofino this afternoon to explore further and return by train at your leisure, our guide will provide directions to walk back directly to the SML train station, or if you wish, there is a scenic ferry from Portofino to the charming and scenic village of Rapallo which takes approx. 20 minutes at a cost of approx. $10, going approx. every couple of hours and then from Rapallo there is a train approx. every couple of hours back to Moneglia where our hotel is located. That train is approx. 20 minutes and costs approx. $5.   Rapallo is a scenic village itself to visit and we will visit there on day 6 of our tour this week.  Our visit on day six includes the scenic cable car ride in Rapallo followed by another scenic guided walk.  Our day six visit does not include free time to explore the village, so if you wish to do so, you may wish to enjoy the scenic ferry from Portofino to Rapallo today, giving you the opportunity to explore lovely Rapallo at your leisure and then take the train back from there to Moneglia where our hotel is located.  The two main sites of Rapallo, which you may wish to visit if you make this deviation from Portofino today are - The 16th-century Castello sul Mare (Castle-on-the-Sea) is a scenic and prominent landmark in Rapallo, sitting as it does smack in the harbor. The sixth-century Basilica of Santi Gervasio e Protasio is also worth a visit.

A view of Portofino, with its yachts and colorful builds, set against the backdrop of panoramic greenery.

Meals included today: Breakfast
Distance covered in today’s walk:  8 miles (13 km)
Total ascent: At less than 2500 feet of ascent, this day’s walk is considered modest.

Day 5 – Wednesday May 18th, 2022

Free day to relax, take optional walks, visit the two remaining villages of C.T. or visit nearby Portovenere or Genova

Today you will enjoy a full free day at your own leisure.  You may wish to walk to the nearby beach for a walk along the shore, or you may wish to take the short train ride back to one of the five villages of Cinque Terre and explore one or more of the villages at your own pace.  Each are connected by frequent trains and ferries. The two villages in the Cinque Terre which we did not visit on day three are Riomaggiore and Manarola.

Riomaggiore is the southernmost village of the Cinque Terre.  It has lots of “Wow” factor, as the sight of houses clinging to its steep hills will immediately invoke this exclamation.  The town is also known for its locally produced wines.  It has lots of shops and restaurants.  A visit to this village should also include a brief stop to see the Church of San Giovanni Battista (St. John the Baptist), a medieval church that oozes serenity on the hillside upon which it is built.

From our hotel in Moneglia, just take the scenic stroll of approx. 15 minutes to the train station and from there take the train approx. 45 minutes to Riomaggiorre.  The trains go approx. every 30-45 minutes and cost approx. $5

After enjoying the sights of Riomaggiore, you can take the frequent train, which takes only approx. three minutes to reach the village of Manorola, or the popular ferry boat which runs frequently throughout the day and offers a scenic means of transport between the villages and takes only shortly longer than the train, or you can take the popular short paved and flat Via dell Amore scenic walking trail which also connects the two villages.  (approx. half a mile long)

Like the other Cinque Terre villages, Manorola sits atop a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.  It is the second smallest of the five villages and is the oldest. Manorola is filled with the same charming and colorful buildings as the other villages.  It too is known for its wines and its vineyards, as far back as Roman times.

Or for those with a desire to explore further, you might like to use the opportunity for some more sightseeing.  Genoa, the region’s capital city, home of Christopher Columbus and the largest aquarium in Europe, is a great choice for sightseeing. Alternatively, you could spend some time in the nearby town of Portovenere, referred to as being one of the stops in the "Bay of Poets"  or use the day to visit the beautiful town of Lucca, located further away.

To get to Portovenere, just walk to the Moneglia train station (approx. 15 minutes’ walk from our hotel). Take the train to Vernazza, one of the villages of the Cinque Terre that we visited on day three. The train takes approx.. 30  minutes, running approx. every 2 to 3 hours and costs approx.. $5  You can explore Vernazza further if you wish and then take the scenic ferry from Vernazza to Portovenere.  The ferry takes approx.. 1 hour, running approx.. every 2 hours and costs between $20 and $30 one way.
Or for anyone wishing to explore another scenic walking path at your leisure today, there are other trails which our local private walking guide or our hotel can direct you to, if you ask in the days prior to today’s free day. Two of the more popular are:

  • The Pass of Telegraph to  Biassa

This path is called "Via Lemmen" ("The Lemmen Way"). It connects Riomaggiore with the Montenero sanctuary, the path #1 (Telegrafo) and the hamlet of Biassa. You can take one of the two paths to reach Portovenere from Riomaggiore.

Difficulty: low*.
Length: 4 km / 2.5 miles.
Journey time: 1.30-2 hours each way.

  • SVA-590 (ex. 10). Monterosso  to The Cape of Mesco.
A very popular path among tourists. It is the shortest way to reach San Antonio Monastery situated on the very beautiful Cape of Mesco from where you get a panoramic view over the entire Cinque Terre that cannot be explained in words.

    Difficulty: low*.
    Length: 2.2 km / 1.4 miles.
Journey time: Round trip approx. two hours to 2.5 depending on your own pace.

The view from the trail leading to the San Antonio Monastery

Our suggested Cinque Terre plan for the free day, for those wishing to see more of the Cinque Terre villages:

Take the train from Moneglia/hotel to the village of Montorosso in Cinque Terre (22 minutes ), then take this approx. 1 hour scenic walk to the beautiful San Antonio monastery and back to Montorosso and then take the train from Montorosso to the two villages in Cinque Terre not visited on day three (Those are Manarola and Riomaggiore.  It takes only 17 minutes by train from Montorosso to Riomaggiore, (or a scenic ferry) where you can enjoy a leisurely lunch with a view of the sea and the cliffs while exploring Riomaggiore and then its only five minutes by train from there to Manarola) to visit those the last village that afternoon and then take the train back from Manarola to the hotel in Moneglia.(55 minutes from Manarola to Moneglia. )

Scenes of Riomaggiore, our suggested lunch stop on today’s free today.

Meals included today: Breakfast

Day 6 Thursday May 19th, 2022

We will enjoy a ride on the Montallegro cable car for fantastic views and then a guided walk down to the village of Chiavari. We will also enjoy an included wine tasting at the end of the day

This morning we will take a short included train ride to Rapallo and upon arrival in Rapallo we will then take the cable car up to the sanctuary of Montallegro (600 meters/ approx. 1800 feet).

The stunning views from the cable car we will take from Rapallo to the sanctuary of Montallagro.

From here we will set out on a walk through quiet woodland, catching glimpses of the Ligurian sea en route to the seaside town of Chiavari.

Sitting on the Entella River where it empties into the sea, Chiavari has a fertile river plain that is surrounded by mountains until it reaches the Mediterranean.

The historic center is sprinkled with Genovese style palazzi, Renaissance buildings, fountains and gardens. Elegant arcades flank some of the edifices. The pastel-painted town looks sunny and festive next to the dazzling water. We will enjoy a picnic lunch with a scenic view and then enjoy some free time to relax and explore the charming village of Chiavari.  We will together return to Moneglia by train (approx. 30-45 minutes) to relax along the indoor pool, sun deck and Jacuzzi at our hotel.

Images of Chiavari
